Technical Project Manager

POSITION OVERVIEW

TEDx is the world’s largest network of events that stage and record TED-style talks.  Nearly 4,000 events in 170 countries generate 20,000 talks that are viewed online more billion times - every year.  A small team of 20 people manages this network largely through the use of technology -- cloud-based tools that support the backend of a licensing and media organization and frontend tools that enable organizers around the world to produce great events that yield great talks.  The Technical Project Manager is at the nexus of all these tools and technologies. Managing the development, maintenance, connectivity, and enhancements of technical solutions, liaising with licensees around the world, internal stakeholders who define needs and strategies, an internal technical team with limited resources, and a wide range of 3rd party providers who build separate applications.  This dizzying, fast moving, and constantly changing environment can be exhilarating for someone who can turn complex problems into simple solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Business Administration, Economics, Engineering, Technology management or equivalent required
  • A minimum of five years in a Project Management role with a demonstrated degree of technical acumen or comparable work experience
  • A minimum of five years partnering with subject matter experts (product managers, engineers, CTO) or comparable work experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, presentation, and collaborative skills to work effectively with teams throughout the organization. Strong relationship building, and organization skills
  • Strong communication skills - proven experience communicating complex and technical issues with a wide audience and create clear technical documentation
  • Ability to prioritize projects and tasks based on importance, impact, and urgency
  • Prior database management experience a plus - in particular, Salesforce
  • Self-starter, with attention to detail and ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong time management skills - able to set and maintain timelines & deadlines, and deliver multiple projects, of long and short duration, concurrently
  • Experience writing for the web and web content management, including exposure to information design
  • Experience with project management and customer service tools (i.e. JIRA, Pivotal, Zendesk)
  • Proficient in Mac OS, G-Suite and Microsoft products
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with all TEDx team stakeholders to understand and support needs
  • Use data and analytics to enable data-driven decisions and product strategies
  • Research and analyze third-party solutions and weigh them against internal build (build vs. buy)
  • Liaise between the TEDx team, internal product/tech teams and third-party vendors
  • Define project scope and generate requirements
  • Propose creative solutions that optimize internal and external resources and operational efficiency
  • Create detailed work plans to identify and sequence activities necessary timely completions
  • Prioritize and structure workflow for short and long-term needs and execute against these goals
  • Work with the TED Tech team to prioritize TEDx projects and provide insight and direction on TEDx priorities and needs
  • Familiarity with RESTful API design and ability to access data using scripting language (Python)
  • Generate reports for various stakeholders on regular and ad-hoc basis from a variety of data sources (SQL, APIs, Spreadsheets, etc.)
  • Maintain content on TEDx section on TED.com, in collaboration with TEDx subject matter experts owners (with support from TEDx editorial and the TED team in general)
  • Provide basic Salesforce / Visualforce support
  • Comfortable assisting in customer service efforts related to product and systems
  • Other duties and special projects as may be assigned from time to time
  • Must be capable of working independently, and collaboratively; Must be willing to work as back up to others in case of absence
  • Willingness to contribute however possible to ensure the overall effectiveness of position
