Community Support Specialist


Are you passionate about spreading ideas globally? The TED Translators program is a community of volunteers from 160 countries who subtitle TED Talks into 100+ languages. TED Translators’ subtitles appear on, our iOS and Android apps, YouTube and numerous partner platforms, garnering tens of millions of views annually. We’re on the hunt for a Community Support Specialist who will be the primary touchpoint for our community of 30,000 volunteers.

The Community Support Specialist will lead our customer service efforts and help execute community development initiatives. The Community Support Specialist will resolve support cases in a timely manner and synthesize feedback from our global community to help inform product and program decisions. The Community Support Specialist should be a proactive person who enjoys communicating and understands cultural nuance. This role reports to the Community Development Manager on the TED Translators team.


  • At least 2+ years of customer service experience, preferably using a support ticket system
  • Ability to work well with people and technology
  • Sharp attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
  • Proactive, self-driven problem solver
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Tech savviness and an ability to troubleshoot system issues
  • Fluency in a second language a plus, but not required
  • Experience in translation, localization and/or subtitling a plus, but not required


  • Manage community support via our help desk and social media
  • Uncover trends in community support cases and report to the team
  • Help research, design and implement scalable systems to meet community needs
  • Support global recruitment and community development initiatives
  • Coordinate translation requests from speakers and internal teams
  • Mobilize groups of volunteers for time-sensitive tactical projects
  • Manage logistics for online meetups and in-person events around the world
  • Process new volunteer applications and assist with onboarding
  • Support day-to-day team operations
  • Other duties and special projects as may be assigned from time to time
  • Willingness to contribute however possible to ensure the overall effectiveness of position

This is a full-time position based in TED's downtown New York office. The role will begin as a 3-month contract position with the high possibility of a full time extension. Telecommuting is not an option.
